WHAT IS IT:
On Sunday, Oct 11th, Boy Scout Troop 601 invites Cubs of all ages to join us for a day of Orienteering at Caumsett Park. The event is run by the Long Island Orienteering Club (http://www.liorienteering.com/) and we go approximately once per year. What is Orienteering? It's a hike through a park following a map to find various "controls." Each control has a punch which you use to punch your group's card. Use of a compass is encouraged. Troop 601 will put 1-2 boy scouts with each group of cubs and teach them how to read a map and use a compass. This knowledge will satisfy 2 of the three requirements of the Map & Compass Belt Loop, as well as provide knowledge that can be used to complete the Map & Compass Academics Pin. There are courses of various degrees of difficulty - we will be doing the easiest course.

COST:
Parking at Caumsett park is $6 per vehicle. The LI Orienteering club charges $10 for the first member of the group and $1 per additional member. So, you have to do a little math to figure out the cost per person. For example, a group of 6 would cost $15 or $2.50 per person. Each group gets one map, HOWEVER, in my experience, each cub likes to get a map and the LI Orienteering club sells additional maps for $2 each. A budget of $5-$6 per person should cover the parking, registration and maps for all.

WAIVER FORM: A signed waiver form is REQUIRED by ALL HIKERS. This is a requirement of the LI Orienteering Club and they have the blank form available on their website at: http://liorienteering.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48

WHAT TO BRING
Bring a water bottle and a compass (if you have one). Wear hiking boots - our troop encourages high ankle boots to avoid a severly twisted ankle from a mis-step. A trail lunch is recommended, and Troop 601 will provide various elements for assembling a trail lunch, along with a short lecture on which components are healthy and provide energy for such a hike. Each scout will be given a zip-lock bag and allowed to fill it with an assortment of goodies. Anyone with special dietary needs should pack their own lunch.

TIME:
We will leave as a caravan of cars and other vehicles from the Chase Bank parking lot next to St Luke's church at 9:30AM on 10/11. If you wish to meet us there, that's fine, by you still need to RSVP. I expect to get to Caumsett park well before the 11AM registration time. This will allow us ample time for the trail lunch lecture. The hike takes around an hour or so and the last group is sent out at 1PM (groups are sent out at time spaced intervals). The park closes at 3:30PM, so we will be done by then.

ADULT SUPERVISION
BSA rules for adult supervision apply. All cubs must be accompanied by a parent or Den Leader and at least two adults must be in every group.

RSVP BY 10/7
I need to know a head count of the cubs (and cub level) and adults who are going so I can plan my boy scout guides. Very important is that I need to know how many will want to buy maps at $2 each, since the LI Orienteering Club needs to print enough copies. These are color maps and since the printing is expensive (and each is highlighted with the controls we need to find), the club does not print an endless supply. It would be unfortunate to tell the cubs they cannot have a map, because the club ran out of copies.
